Coming after a study of informal logic, which concerns the claims being made in the content of an argument, a study of formal logic analyzes the structure of the argument. logic to the students’ own concerns and interests. The text we’ve chosen for this course is designed to emphasize the practical and real-world application of soundly structured, deductive logic. Using methods such as Socratic dialogue, readings from Plato and Sherlock Holmes, diagrams, memory devices, and personal application, it teaches in ways that provide lasting benefit to the student. Persuasive Writing and Speech: 1 Credit

In the art of persuasion, the classical trivium comes into its own, as grammar, logic and rhetoric harmonize in the achieve-ment of a winning argument. In this course, students will be able to put to use all the logic and writing skills learned up to now plus some new ideas that will enrich their writing and

speaking. A dozen different techniques of classical rhetoric will be ex-plained and practiced. Students will be asked to read and recognize the techniques being used by other authors, practice them in short paragraph assignments, and eventually put the tools to use in one essay and two short speeches. We are confident that the benefit of this course will be seen not only in persuasive discourse but in all other fields of writing and speaking. Advanced English Composition: 1 Credit (English or Rhetoric) The Writer’s Workshop takes an approach to teaching writin that is new only because it is so old. Today, rhetoric and com position typically proceed by ignoring what was done for 25 years in Western education. Gregory Roper, on the other han helps students learn to write in the way the great writers of the past learned: by carefully imitating masters of the craft, includ-ing Cicero, Thomas Aquinas, Charles Dickens, Sojourner Truth, James Joyce, and Ernest Hemingway. By living in their workshops and imitat-ing these and other masters, apprentice writers – like apprentice musi-cians, painters, and blacksmiths of the past – will rapidly improve the complexity of their art and discover their own native voices.

This course is different from any other offered by Tree of Life. Students will be assigned a tutor and enrolled in a small peer group (maximum of 8 students) where writing will be shared (via e-mail), critiqued, and celebrated.
